Imgur x Black Girls CODE

Share The Fun!

In 2020, Imgur committed to donating $1,000,000 of advertising space to non-profit organizations that focus on racial justice issues. Black Girls CODE was our first partner in this important endeavor, and we were thrilled to help drive signups and awareness for their Afrofuturism-inspired hackathon, a three-day virtual hackathon where students between the ages of 12-17 participated in skills development workshops centered on ideation, design thinking, wireframe creation, and product design. They also attended virtual cultural events, where they heard empowering messages from actress and entrepreneur Gabrielle Union, renowned historian Tree Boyd-Pates, and more.

The hackathon ended with a pitch day where judges from an array of tech companies provided students with feedback and selected 3 winning teams. Among the winning projects was an app called Rooted, which aligns Black professionals with career opportunities at tech companies in an effort to diversify Silicon Valley. Congratulations to all the inspiring winners!
